“There’s something in here with us,” Liz whispered just as the orb of light she conjured floated effortlessly off the palm of her hand. It was a stark contrast to the more primitive homemade torch and cursed spoon combo that Moira was wielding. “You feel that too, right?”

The library was dark, extremely humid, and the smell of fish and rot protruded from just about every crack and orifice of the unstable structure that was not flooded. The entire ground floor was underwater, nothing to do about that. Any books that were once down there were now part of the exclusive papier-mâché collection. No exceptions.

Luckily, Moira had already figured out days ago that the restricted and occult sections were located on the top floor. The book they’d been looking for in order to learn how to speak with people across the veil of death had to be there. If it wasn’t, then they could be sure it had been long-since taken.

The only thing they had to do currently was not to fall through any broken boards of moldy wood into the water… They’d be just fine. Except for the countless of possible dangers that might lurk inside the library on dry ground.

Moira laughed. “Well, whatever’s in here, it’s not going to be one of those giant sharks that ate up the boat.”

“Oh?”

“I didn’t see any legs on that thing, did you?” Moira smirked. “So as long as we steer clear of the flooded lower levels, at least those beasties won’t bother us.” She shrugged.

“You know, for a black magic practitioner, you seem pretty optimistic.” Liz stopped for a moment and sniffed the thick humid air. “There’s magic dripping from every crevice in this building, and it’s old. Very old.”

Moira stopped in her stride, turned around and poked Liz on the chest. “First of all, voodoo and black magic are not the same thing at all, and I don’t do black magic. I know it’s hard, but you’ve got to start looking at me and the rest of my family as entirely separate entities.” She frowned. “And as far as what you saw me doing to those two Haven agents back in Darkness Falls, ’cause I’m pretty sure that was going to be your next remark, it was a means to an end. It was survival—them or us. Surely you can understand. You must’ve used hostile magic before to save someone, or defuse a situation?”

Liz thought back at the hunters in the diner who had dragged the Jersey Devil young inside. A brief memory flashed before her eyes as she remembered what she had done to the local men. She saw their pleading eyes, the terror on their faces, the realization of the finality of their existence as it arrived.

At first, she said nothing. Then she finally admitted in furtive whisper, “Okay, yeah. I know what it’s like to be misunderstood.”

Seeing the look on Liz’s face, Moira gave her a nod, then continued: “Secondly… Yeah, I feel it too. There’s something here that’s out of place.
